Balco Medical Centre, a premier cancer hospital in Naya Raipur, has recently procured a new apheresis cell separator. This is the second apheresis cell separator, which is installed in the modern blood centre within this hospital.
As a token of appreciation of Balco Medical Centre’s efforts in providing affordable and quality cancer care, Mr. Ashish Saraf, President of Manorama Industries Ltd., Manorama Group has contributed towards the purchase of this new apheresis cell separator.
Apheresis is an emerging treatment modality, which improves the outcome of susceptible clinical disorders like cancer, sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia. These techniques include Hematopoietic Stem cell apheresis, therapeutic plasmapheresis (TPE), Red Cell Apheresis (RCE), Leukapheresis, Granulocyte apheresis and many more. Some of these applications are the primary therapy for certain disease processes, and many others are considered to be adjunctive therapy, but both categories of apheresis treatments are considered to be effective and beneficial. During apheresis procedures, blood passes through a machine called cell separator that takes out the desired blood component and returns the undesired back into the bloodstream. During the procedure, the patient lies down or in a reclined position and two intravenous (IV) lines are used: one line removes the blood and the other line returns the blood cells and plasma that are not collected.
Through the previous apheresis cell separator, the specialized team of Transfusion Medicine specialist and Haematologist at this comprehensive cancer care hospital conducted many procedures that were done first-time in Chhattisgarh. These include Therapeutic Plasma exchange, Granulocytapheresis, Leukapheresis, Red cell exchange for sickle cell patient (Erythrocytapherasis) and Convalescent Plasmapheresis. The second apheresis cell separator was procured to meet the increasing demand of these procedures for treating various patients effectively.
