Electro physiology helps to understand the electrical activity of the heart.

The heart is a muscular organ that starts functioning before you are actually born and keeps working till your last breath. A healthy heart beats at regular intervals with adequate strength. The mechanical pumping activity of the heart is regulated by electrical activity spread through the organ. This is regulated by flow of ions in tissues which is also called ionic current. Any change in this current can make the heartbeats go slow or fast, stop for a fraction of second and resume. Such erratic behavior of the heart can pose with different health problems and also threaten life.

Electro physiology is a branch of medicine that can record and evaluate this ionic current, monitor it and put in devices to keep it stable. says Dr Javed Parvez, Cardiac Electro Physiologist.

The only Cardiac Electro Physiologist in Chhattisgarh Dr Javed says, irregular or weak heartbeats may present with various symptoms. The patient might experience, breathlessness, a racing of the heart or a feel as if it is beating against the chest walls. Such episodes also present heavy perspiration.

The average heart beats approximately 240 crore times during a lifespan of 70 years. The normal heart beats 60-100 times in a minute. If the beating rate falls the patient can experience fainting, lightness of head etc. Sometime the heart races to 200-300 beats per minute. Extreme changes in the heart beat rate can be fatal.

Guazing a change in the electric impulses running the heart is possible in cardiac electro physiology techniques. The heart muscles are reached through a catheter and the impulses recorded. There might be abnormal sources of elcetrical activity in the heart or there might be extra abnormal paths to those elctrical activity.Such problems can be identified during an Electrophysiology study. Exact location of these abnormalities within the heart can be found out. This procedure is called 3D Mapping. Finally abnormal sources or circuits can be rectified so that normal beating resumes in the heart.

CRT-D device therapy

This device is similar to a pacemaker. It is implanted in the heart with three wires. It helps to improve heart’s pumping function by allowing both the lower chambers of the heart to contract simultaneously whenever there is a conduction problem named as left bundle branch block.
