Successful Cornea Transplants at Bhimrao Ambedkar MEMORIAL Hospital , Raipur in three hours .

A record 4 successful cornea transplants were done in Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial hospital at Raipur. The patients included a boy of 9 and three women of 50, 66 and 73 years respectively. All surgeries were done by Dr Santosh Singh Patel and his team including Dr Rajesh, Dr Anju, Dr Kamli, Dr Prateek, Dr Vandana, Dr Vineet and nursing staff Neelima, Smriti, Urmila and Venkat.

The boy had lost his vision following an accident. The wound got infected and subsequently vision was lost. A cornea transplant was done succesfully replacing the damaged cornea. Vision was restored.

In another case a 50 year women had injured her eye while handling paddy spikes. She had developed corneal ulcer with puss which led to total vision loss. A cornea transplant was done succesfully and vision was restored.

The other female patients aged 66 and 73 respectively had lost vision due to aging and glucoma. Vision was restored by corneal transplantation.

HOD Department of Opthalmology of the hospital Dr ML Garg shared the success story with enthusiasm. “We are doing corneal transplantation, removal of cataract, retina surgery, ROP screening, laser treatment, glucoma surgery and management on regular basis and the results are good”, he said. “We are also doing paediatric cataract surgery, squint surgery, trauma management and surgery, diabetic retinopathy screening, retinal detachment surgery and also have an eye bank,” he added.
